Alaska Supporting Health Care Access Through Loan Repayment (SHARP)

The days may be shorter in Alaska, but if you’re there as a health care professional, it may pay to lose a bit of daylight.

Am I eligible?

If you are a licensed health care professional practicing in a federally designated health professional shortage area in Alaska, you may be eligible for this award if you sign a 2-year commitment to practice in that area.

Health care professions fall into two tiers:

  • SHARP tier 1 includes physicians, dentists, or pharmacists.
  • SHARP tier 2 jobs include nurses, dental hygienists, psychologists, and social workers.

How much is the award?

If you are eligible, tier 1 professions may receive up to $35,000 per year for 2 years, or $47,000 per year for positions that are deemed very hard to fill. Qualified tier 2 professions are eligible for $20,000 per year for 2 years, or $27,000 for positions that are very hard to fill.

Which loans qualify?

• Stafford Loans
• Grad PLUS Loans
• Consolidation Loans
• Perkins Loans
• Private student loans
